FIREWALL PROTECTION
What is a Personal Firewall?
A firewall offers protection much like a gate or wall protecting from outside intrusion. All information must be approved before passing the firewall. A firewall has a set of rules in which must be passed before entering.
If the information is not allowed via the rules the firewall blocks it. This helps prevent external damage from attacks.
Most firewall's are also set to check whether information is approved to leave. This helps control the amount of damage if a firewall-protected machine is infected by a virus or otherwise compromised and tries to send attacks out.
Why is a firewall important?
Just having your computer connected to the internet can subject you to all kinds of unwanted invasions. Individuals with no respect for others wanting your personal information, hack into your computer, create havoc upon your life.
Some attacks can damage or destroy important information on your computer; other attacks may allow someone else to control your computer remotely, read your credit card information, or make your system unusable. You need to protect your computer, your work, and your personal information from unauthorized access.
A personal firewall, along with anti virus software and system patching, are vital parts of computer security and maintenance which every computer owner should understand and use.
Most newer operating systems come with built in firewall's
Windows XP - Built-in firewall - ICF
The Windows XP operating system comes with a built-in one-way firewall called ICF (short for Internet Connection Firewall). Limited. Please do more research on this before depending on just the built in firewall in SP 1.
In Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1, ICF is turned off by default. However, in the Service Pack 2 , ICF will be turned on by default.
Windows 2000, NT, ME, 98, or 95 - Not built in; third-party firewall software is available.
MacIntosh and Unix both offer built in firewall's
Where Do I Find Firewall Software?
Third party firewall software can be found free on the internet. There are several very easy to use and more complicated. T he more complicated firewall's give the user more control over what can and cannot be blocked or allowed.
